Every Amazon SEO course teaches the same thing: max out your 200 characters, front-load the keyword, jam in every variant you can find. That advice was right in 2019. In 2026, it's actively losing you sales.
Here's what's changed, with real data from the listings we've rewritten this year.
The shift: mobile shoppers see ~70 characters
On the Amazon iOS and Android apps — which now drive over 60% of US shopping sessions — search result titles truncate at roughly 70 characters. That's where most shoppers make their click decision. Anything past character 70 is dead weight in search; it only renders on the detail page.
And on the detail page itself, mobile titles cap at ~150 characters before they collapse into "...show more". That's the second hard truncation point.
If your best selling point sits at character 140, mobile shoppers never see it on the result page and have to tap "show more" to read it on the detail page.
What works in 2026
1. Treat the first 70 characters as your headline
The first 70 chars should answer three questions at a glance:
- What is this product? (category keyword)
- What size / quantity? (a number)
- What's the #1 differentiator? (one strong descriptor)
Brand goes after the headline, not before. Yes, this is the opposite of what most agencies still teach. Amazon's own internal data (visible in Sponsored Brands reports) shows shopper attention drops 40% after the brand name.
2. Use the 70–150 character zone for the secondary hook
This is where your second-best feature, second-best keyword variant, or material/spec lives. Shoppers who scroll past the first 70 will read this — they're the high-intent buyers.
3. Drop the third-tier keywords
If your title has "for women, for men, for adults, for travel, for office, for school" — pick the one that matches your top organic search. The rest belong in backend search terms, not the title.

The character budget
Here's the budget we now teach clients:
- Chars 1–35: Size or quantity number + category keyword. ("32oz Insulated Water Bottle")
- Chars 36–70: #1 differentiator. ("Leak-Proof, Keeps Cold 24h")
- Chars 71–120: Secondary features and material. ("BPA-Free Stainless Steel")
- Chars 121–148: Brand and trust signal. ("by HydraFlow, Dishwasher Safe")
- Chars 149–200: Leave empty. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.
